Performance of funding by NSFC #China is reviewed by an international committee. Some main suggestions (comments in the brackets are mine):
substantially more staff to process huge applications, at the same time reduce the number of applications submitted (good to cut applications)
International problems, to attract international researchers (good for many overseas researchers)
extend the peer-review model to other funding agencies in China (good suggestion, however…)
improve the review of inter-disciplinary research (where I am in this dilemma: metallurgy, chemical engineering, material science)
promote early career researchers (too many PhD in China, who should be considered)
increase flexibility in spending the fund (should avoid corruption at the same time)
