Airborne particles might grow fast in cities

Nanoscale particles have been observed to form and grow in the atmospheres of many cities, contradicting our understanding of particle-formation processes. Experiments now reveal a possible explanation for this mystery.

Rapid growth of new atmospheric particles by nitric acid and ammonia condensation

New-particle formation is a major contributor to urban smog1,2, but how it occurs in
cities is often puzzling3. If the growth rates of urban particles are similar to those found in
cleaner environments (1–10 nanometres per hour), then existing understanding
suggests that new urban particles should be rapidly scavenged by the high concentration
of pre-existing particles. Here we show, through experiments performed under
atmospheric conditions in the CLOUD chamber at CERN, that below about +5 degrees
Celsius, nitric acid and ammonia vapours can condense onto freshly nucleated particles
as small as a few nanometres in diameter. Moreover, when it is cold enough (below −15
degrees Celsius), nitric acid and ammonia can nucleate directly through an acid–base
stabilization mechanism to form ammonium nitrate particles. Given that these vapours
are often one thousand times more abundant than sulfuric acid, the resulting particle
growth rates can be extremely high, reaching well above 100 nanometres per hour.
However, these high growth rates require the gas-particle ammonium nitrate system to
be out of equilibrium in order to sustain gas-phase supersaturations. In view of the strong
temperature dependence that we measure for the gas-phase supersaturations, we
expect such transient conditions to occur in inhomogeneous urban settings, especially
in wintertime, driven by vertical mixing and by strong local sources such as traffic. Even
though rapid growth from nitric acid and ammonia condensation may last for only a few
minutes, it is nonetheless fast enough to shepherd freshly nucleated particles through
the smallest size range where they are most vulnerable to scavenging loss, thus greatly
increasing their survival probability. We also expect nitric acid and ammonia nucleation
and rapid growth to be important in the relatively clean and cold upper free troposphere,
where ammonia can be convected from the continental boundary layer and nitric acid is
abundant from electrical storms4,5.

FW: [Working Life] My seismic career shift

PhDs can read this article to rethink about their career path.

 

'About 6 months ago, I sat at work, watching a robot vacuum cleaner glide confidently across the floor—until it dove off a ledge. "Well," my co-worker remarked, "that's not good," as he entered the result into a spreadsheet. Observing such product failures is just one part of my job as the senior scientist for a consumer product testing website, where anything even tangentially related to science ends up on my plate. On any given day, I could be tweaking a data model of smartphone battery life, thinking about how to test the temperature consistency of charcoal grills, or writing a consumer safety article about defrosting a turkey. I love rising to these delightfully unpredictable daily challenges, which I never could have anticipated when I was working on my Ph.D.'

Given the fast increasing number of postgraduates and the decreasing period to finish a research degree (e.g., 3 years for a Ph.D. degree in many Australian universities) it becomes essentially important that a transition period should be there between formal academic and postgraduate to further advance their professional skills. It might be helpful to promote their development by establishing some small funds for them to apply. Right now, although the salary is relatively high for many postdocs in Australia, compared to those in the United States and Europe, the future is not optimistic for postdocs because there is currently only one funding scheme for them (with success rate 14.3% for 2015, which is quite low given that postdocs from the world will apply and research in Australia is not leading in many areas). Many postdocs and early academics (lecturer/senior lecturer) are contemplating or attracted to leaving Australia. There is definitely something that Australian government can do to retain or improve its research capacity to enhance its innovative capability for the challenging economics.

Postdocs reimagined

In April, we asked young scientists if the idea of the postdoc position is obsolete. If so, what should replace it, and if not, how can it be improved? We received a record response of more than 300 submissions. About a third of respondents felt that postdocs are indeed obsolete. The rest deemed them necessary, if imperfect. Many felt that creating a permanent staff scientist position, with full salary and benefits, would help the plight of postdocs, either by replacing the postdoc entirely or by serving as a long-term option after the completion of a postdoc. Others suggested that a system in which postdocs had dedicated funding and were not beholden to a PI would foster more creativity and minimize exploitation. Tailoring postdocs to a broader array of career paths was another common theme. Many responses reflected the feeling that postdocs deserve more respect and recognition. A sample of the responses describing these and other ideas can be found below. To allow for as many voices as possible, in some cases we have printed excerpts of longer submissions (indicated by ellipses) and lightly copyedited original text for clarity. 【转载】以管窥豹:两组数据看清华离诺贝尔奖到底有多远


在清华大学百年校庆之际,清华高调推出” 清华学堂人才培养计”, 该计划旨在培养中国本土的诺贝尔奖(为了避免争议,本文只限科学类,即:物理、化学和生理/医学奖)、菲尔兹奖(数学诺贝尔奖)未来得主。此类的学堂/计划,清华不是第一家,至少山东大学去年就推出泰山堂班,当然清华也绝不会是最后一家,相信还会有更多的985大学跟进推出此类的计划/学堂。这类的计划/班共同特点是,筛选最好的学生、配备最好的师资以及最好的硬件等(其中泰山堂班的生均花费是普通班的至少5倍)。这个世界其他国家的大学是否也有类似的计划或者班,这些学生中以后是否真的会有人获得诺贝尔奖,不再本文的讨论之列,本文只想用两个数字来看看清华离诺贝尔奖到底有多远。
在开始上数据之前,先来看看为何我国的诺贝尔奖情结比一般国家更重。我国人口全世界第一,GDP全球第二,我伟大、正确的执政党已经领导这个国家60余年啦,除了3个不想得到的诺贝尔奖(至少有些人不想),想得到的诺贝尔奖奖项尤其是自然科学类的三大奖一个都没有,就连我国N多人看不上的印度很早至少有拉曼拿下诺贝尔奖。这不能不让我国的高层领导人闹心,对国人实在无法交代。作为这个国家的普通子民(不知算公民否?),我们似乎有必要看看作为我国顶尖大学(至少是之一吧)的清华离诺贝尔奖到底有多远?现在科学网有N多的有关清华、有关世界一流大学建设的博文,本文也算是从另外一个视角来凑个热闹。当然诺贝尔奖并不是(至少不应该是)我们的最终目的和追求目标,但诺贝尔奖无疑是世界科学界(至少对上述三大领域而言)顶尖水平的一个重要标志和象征。
看哪所大学是否有潜力拿诺贝尔奖,主要看的是该所大学的最NB的科研成果和科学家学术水平,而衡量这两个指标有两个重要参数:1)发表的论文被引次数;2)ISI(现在属于汤姆逊路透集团)整的Highly Cited Researchers(详见下面解释)的数量。这两项指标如果评价单个科学家可能会有失偏颇,但是如果来评价一所大学、一个国家的整体科研水平和科学家,则相当可观、很有参考价值(如果有网友认为有更好的指标,请指教)。

Researching sustainable steel: an international research centre established

Research leading to more sustainable steel production could result from a new agreement signed by one of the world’s top steel producers and four Australian universities.

Shanghai-based Baosteel Group, one of the world's top three steel producers, has partnered with The University of Queensland (UQ), University of New South Wales, Monash University, and the University of Wollongong to establish the Baosteel-Australia Joint Research and Development Centre.

The centre will seek to create fundamental knowledge and exploitable technologies with commercial relevance to steel industry. It will focus on metallurgy and new materials, energy utilisation, environmental sustainability and other new technologies.

Baosteel will provide up to $25 million over five years for research and development projects at the centre.

The Joint R&D Centre will be headquartered at UQ’s St Lucia campus in Brisbane. Its Technical Advisory Committee is chaired by Scientia Professor Aibing Yu, of the UNSW School of Materials Science and Engineering.

"We will now start to assess research proposals from the four universities and we hope the funding to research in the centre will start from July 2011," says Professor Yu.

how to correctly set the default display for acrobat

The PDF opens with the page layout specified in Preferences unless a different page layout is specified in Document Properties (File > Properties > Initial View). The Document Properties setting overrides the Preferences setting. If using Document Properties, be sure to save and close the document for the change to take effect. Acrobat users can change the initial view, unless security settings prevent changes. Reader users cannot change the initial view.

updated new email system of university


Recently, our faculty updated the email system. There is not storage limit and it will be a permanent address.
Before, there is only 20M storage space. We have to forward the email to another address, especially with big attachments. Sometimes, the message will be lost or delayed.
Great thing!
